Captain Anthony A. Less joined the Navy Aviation Officer Program upon graduation from heidelburg College, Tiffin, OH, and was commissioned an Ensign in April, 1960. Captain Less received his aviator's wings in June, 1961.
After attending school in Memphis, TN, Captain Less was assigned to VA-86, a USS Independence (CVA-62) based A-4 Skyhawk squadron. This was followed by a tour as an A-4 weapons instructor in VA-44, NAS Cecil Field, FL. In 1966 Captain Less was chosen into the initial cadre of instructor pilots for the Navy introduction of the A-7 Corsair aircraft in VA-174. This was followed by a tour in VA-105 flying the A-7 in combat aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63). In 1969 he was ordered to the Bureau of Naval Personeel where he served as an Aviation Assignment Officer. It was during this tour that Captain Less was selected to command an operational aircraft squadron. Captain Less became Executive Officer and, subsequently, Commanding Officer of VA-12 flying the A-7E Corsair II aircraft.
In November, 1973, Captain Less returned to NAS Pensacola, FL, where he became the flight leader and first Commanding Officer of the newly commissioned Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Blue Angels. In February, 1976, Captain Less reported to the Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, where he began training in each of the different type aircraft that comprised CVW-9. In August, 1976, he assumed command of CVW-9, the nations most modern Air Wing at that time.
In January, 1978, Captain Less reported to Washington, D.C., where he served in the Pentagon as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Operations for Air Warfare.
From April until November, 1979, Captain Less attended numerous training prior to assuming command of USS Wichita (AOR-1). He served as Wichita's Commanding Officer from December, 1979 until 10 July 1981, a period wherein the ship completed a very successful Western Pacific/Indian Ocean deployment. In August, 1981, Captain Less assumed duties as Executive Assistant and Senior Aide to the Commander in Chief, Pacific. Captain Less assumed command of USS Ranger (CV-61) on 11 June 1982.
