Capt. Henry "Hank" Glindeman was born in Coeur d'Alene, ID on 26 Sep 1924. After primary schooling there, he went to the U.S. Naval Academy on appointment from his native state. He graduated with the Class of 1946 on 6 June 1945 (accelerated course due to WWII).
Capt. Glindeman was assigned to USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) and then to USS Quincy (CA-71). He was then Assistant Operations Officer and Aide to the Chief of Staff on the Staff of ComNavFor, WestPac, Tsingtao, China. He then became Housing Officer at the Port Facility, Tsingtao. We went to USS Furse (DDR-882) in September 1948.
After the Furse Capt. Glindeman reported for flight training at Naval Air Training Command, Pensacola, FL and was designated a Naval Aviator 6 June 1950. He then went to Air Antisubmarine Squadron 23 and then to Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 7. He returned to the Naval Academy in June 1953 as a Marine Engineering Instructor. While there he was in charge of the 1955 Midshipman Cruise on USS Siboney (CVE-119).
Following training at the Jet Transitional Training Unit, Olathe, KS, he joined VF-143. He was a member of VF-143's Gunnery Team at the National Naval Air Weapons Meet in 1957. In October 1957 he reported as Operations Officer of VA-55 and then, a year later, went to VA-126 in a similar capacity. He was fire power demonstration pilot at the Naval Air Weapons Meet in 1958. He then attended the Naval War College (Command and Staff Course), after which he served as Assistant for Overseas and Continental Air Bases in the Personnel Programs Branch of the Aviation Plans Division, Office of CNO, Washington, DC.
After serving as a replacement pilot in VF-124, Capt. Glindeman was Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VF-154. He was assigned to Replacement CVW-12 prior to assuming command of CVW-15 in July 1964. In that capacity, operating from USS Coral Sea (CVA-43), he led the initial air strikes agains North Vietnam, February-May 1965. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V", and two Air Medals during that time.
In May 1965, Capt. Glindeman was assigned as Attack CVW Training Officer on the Staff of ComNavAirForce, U.S. Pacific Fleet and then as Readiness Officer on the Staff of Commander 1st Fleet, where he was awareded the Legion of Merit.
Capt. Glindeman then commanded USS Passumpsic (AO-107) following which he was assigned to the Office of CNO, where he served as Head of the Strike Systems Section until September 1970; then as Deputy Director of the General Planning and Programming Division, for which duty he earned his second Legion of Merit.
In August 1971, Capt. Glindeman was ordered to USS Ranger (CVA-61), where he assumed command on 3 Sep 1971.
